Cypherpunks vs. Institutions: Who Owns Bitcoin’s Future? | BTC Prague 2025 Debate

At BTC Prague 2025, we put the defining question of this Bitcoin era to a live debate — and a live vote: will institutions or cypherpunks own Bitcoin’s future? The crowd started 80/20 in favor of cypherpunks. By the end, it was 85/10. Here’s what was argued, and why it matters.

Bitcoin’s Maturity Is Not Betrayal — It’s Evolution

The case for institutions starts with inevitability. Bitcoin is crossing the chasm from early adopters to the early majority, and that always requires credible, scalable, risk-managed channels. US spot Bitcoin ETFs have attracted over $80 billion in assets as of Q2 2025. BlackRock’s IBIT alone holds over 300,000 bitcoins. Institutional demand is real and growing.

If Bitcoin was a teenager in 2010, it’s now applying for a mortgage. You can rebel in a hoodie, but you still need a bank statement. And since the ETF launch, Bitcoin’s 30-day volatility dropped over 20% — increasing its appeal as a treasury reserve asset. Sovereign wealth funds from Singapore to Norway are exploring BTC exposure. That’s not capture. That’s canonization.

The base layer doesn’t change. Scarcity doesn’t change. Censorship resistance is still anchored in mining and protocol rules. Bitcoin entered the bank lobby wearing a suit — but it’s still carrying a flamethrower under the blazer.

Adoption of Bitcoin Liabilities Is Not Adoption of Bitcoin

Here’s the cypherpunk counter: when Satoshi created Bitcoin, he built it to fix exactly the problems caused by the institutions the other side is defending. Not your keys, not your coins. Under custody, Bitcoin loses every single one of its superpowers — permissionlessness, censorship resistance, fixed supply. All of it, gone.

Any pile of things can be speculated on. But Bitcoin isn’t any pile of things. It allows anyone to transact without permission, borderlessly, self-sovereignly. You can’t have any of that through an institution. And if most Bitcoin holders share values different from ours, what will Bitcoin look like in 20 years? They will find ways to influence development, shape regulations, and we could end up with a white market Bitcoin versus a black market Bitcoin — with cypherpunks criminalized in the process.

The Cypherpunk Numbers Are Actually Growing

Here’s a nuance worth sitting with: yes, cypherpunks are a shrinking percentage of the Bitcoin ecosystem. But the absolute number of people who hold cypherpunk values is growing at an incredible rate compared to 2008. The question isn’t whether there’s contamination — contamination is inevitable. The question is: who is infecting whom faster?

When you look at how many Wall Street suits are now exposed to concepts like self-custody and censorship resistance, the direction of influence becomes interesting. Even Michael Saylor once said “come take my private keys and I may have a boating accident.” That rhetoric penetrating institutional circles is remarkable — even if a tax investigation later changed his tone.

Builders Own the Bitcoin Experience

The Bitcoin ecosystem evolves around the products people actually use — hardware wallets, mobile wallets, mining pools, Lightning. The builders of those tools are cypherpunks. Institutions are not building anything tangible. They are marketing Bitcoin. They are selling indirect, remote exposure — but they are not shaping how billions of people interact with Bitcoin daily.

Cypherpunks infuse their values into their products. And when those products are used by millions worldwide, cypherpunk values scale. Open source software is a monument. An ETF is a marketing vehicle.

We already saw what an institutional takeover attempt looks like — the 2017 block size wars. Coinbase, BitPay, venture capital-backed firms tried to co-opt the protocol. They had miners. They had money
