Daniela Brozoni – How to Contribute to Bitcoin (Even If You Don’t Code)

You don’t need to be a developer to help build Bitcoin. At BTC Prague, I shared how I once thought a handful of godlike coders had everything covered — and why I was wrong. Bitcoin is built by a whole community of people with wildly different skills, and there’s a place for you in it.

I Thought I Had Nothing to Give

When I first discovered Bitcoin, I was amazed. A way to send money anywhere in the world, no permission needed. I dove in — every book, every course, every video I could find. But after a while, I started seeing room for improvement. And yet, I convinced myself that some small group of brilliant developers had it all figured out. I sat back and waited for them to fix things. That was a mistake.

When I finally looked behind the curtain, I saw the truth: Bitcoin is built by a huge, diverse community. Everyone contributes something different. And you can too.

The Seven Roles That Build Bitcoin

Two things matter before I list them. First, you don’t have to pick just one — most people wear multiple hats. Second, you don’t need a Bitcoin job to start. Bitcoin is permissionless. You can begin right now.

The first role is the builder — developers like me who write code and improve tools. But even on the technical side, you can be a tester: try out wallets on GitHub before they’re released, find edge cases, report crashes, or simply confirm something works. That feedback is genuinely valuable.

Then there are designers — people who make Bitcoin make sense. Something like transaction fees is confusing at first. Designers study how to explain these concepts and reshape interfaces so users don’t get lost.

Educators are anyone who makes understanding possible. You can explain the technical side, the economics, the philosophy. Or simply translate existing material for your local community. Without educators, we stay in echo chambers.

Organizers do the invisible work. Someone organized this entire conference. You can organize a local meetup, bring developers and designers together, or help open-source projects run more smoothly.

Storytellers explain why Bitcoin matters. That could be a podcast, a Twitter thread, or just telling your family at dinner. We’re all storytellers in some small way.

And then there are thinkers — the Bitcoin philosophers. Asking hard questions, sparking debate, pushing ideas forward. Even arguing on Twitter counts. You’re moving Bitcoin forward even philosophically.

Don’t Underestimate the Newbie

There’s an eighth role people forget: the newbie. When I started out, transaction inputs confused me completely. I never asked explicitly — I just waited until it clicked. Looking back, I can’t even remember what was confusing. If I had asked, I could have helped someone create better educational material. So if you’re just starting out, ask your questions loudly — in forums, in person, everywhere. You reveal the blind spots the rest of us can’t see anymore.

Your First Step

Every contributor you see on stage today once understood nothing about Bitcoin. They just started. So try reviewing a pull request, redesigning one wallet screen, writing about one small topic you just learned, organizing one meetup, or posting one thread about why Bitcoin matters. Take the first step, keep putting passion into it, and I promise — there’s a place for you here.

Smart Bitcoiners plan ahead.
