Emile Jellinek – Marketing in Bitcoin

After 15 years of Bitcoin, we still struggle to talk to people outside our bubble. On the BTC Prague stage, I made the case that our ecosystem desperately needs better marketing — not to compromise our values, but to actually reach the people Bitcoin was built for.

We’re Preaching to the Converted

Take the Study Bitcoin project. Projecting the logo onto the ECB building in Frankfurt looked great to us — but it mostly generated engagement inside the Bitcoin echo chamber. And honestly, are you going to study something because you saw a random sticker on the street? If it said “study robotics,” would you? Probably not. Changing someone’s behavior takes more steps than that.

Meanwhile, Greenpeace responded with their own projections across New York and San Francisco — and they were watched by far more people. We have well-funded opponents. We can’t afford to be complacent about how we communicate.

Marketing Is Not a Dirty Word

I’ve had this argument many times with technically-minded Bitcoiners who say marketing is for shitcoiners — that Bitcoin spreads through word of mouth alone. I get the instinct. But even the person living off-grid in the forest benefits from the ten hardware wallet companies that exist today. Those companies exist because the market is growing. Every Bitcoin business plan assumes global adoption as a baseline. That adoption doesn’t happen by itself.

There’s a huge population of people suffering from the exact problems Bitcoin solves — they just don’t know it yet. That’s on us.

Talk About Gains, Not Technology

The classic mistake is leading with technical details — 21 million coins, peer-to-peer networks, decentralization. Most people’s eyes glaze over in seconds. Think about how Apple marketed the iPod. Not specs — just a clear, human benefit. We need to do the same with Bitcoin: focus on what Bitcoin does for you, not how it works underneath.

Early adopters love features and want to experiment. But the mainstream majority just want better lives. They want solutions to daily problems. The product just needs to work — and look good doing it.

Going Mainstream Doesn’t Mean Losing Your Values

There’s a real fear in this community that if we simplify our message, we’ll dilute what Bitcoin stands for. I don’t think that’s true. Keeping it simple doesn’t mean abandoning your principles — it means finding a creative, original way to embed those values into your communication without being heavy-handed about it. Development should be rigorous and uncompromising. Communication needs to be pragmatic.

What This Means in Practice

If you’re a new startup, skip the marketing polish for now — ship your minimum viable product first. If you’re a nonprofit like my organization Bitpolito, find marketers who are already Bitcoin-curious, or make them curious. If you’re a scaling company, this is where I get frustrated: too many growing Bitcoin businesses are underinvesting in design and communication.

People are used to Revolut, Venmo, Cash App. That’s the real competition — not other Bitcoin wallets. If your UX is worse, normies won’t use it. Custodial versus non-custodial means nothing to them. The interface does.

Attract Talent by Showing Excellence

At Bitpolito, when we started investing seriously in design three years ago, something interesting happened — more designers and marketers reached out wanting to contribute. Quality attracts talent. Today’s top designers want to work at Apple, Google, or Prada because those companies produce excellent work. We need Bitcoin companies to become that kind of destination. The more marketing and design talent we bring in, the more we attract. It compounds — just like development does.

We have 25 alumni now working in the Bitcoin space out of fewer than 200 people over five years. That’s proof the model works. Now we need to scale it — and that starts with taking communication seriously.

Smart Bitcoiners plan ahead.
