Grafton Clark – Meet Vexl Clubs: Turning Contacts into Communities
At the BTC Prague stage, I introduced Vexl Clubs — a new feature designed to help people buy Bitcoin peer-to-peer without KYC, even when they have no existing contacts in the app. Here’s why we built it and what it means for Bitcoin circular communities worldwide.
Bitcoin Was Supposed to Feel Different
We all know what Bitcoin is: peer-to-peer electronic cash without the need for financial institutions or middlemen. But lately, it hasn’t been feeling like that. Why are we using apps that ask for your picture, your passport, your blood type? That’s not Bitcoin — that’s a bank with a new coat of paint.
That’s exactly why we built Vexl. It’s a mobile app designed to help you buy and sell Bitcoin the way it was intended — peer-to-peer, without KYC, and without us ever storing your personal information. Everything is encrypted. You are in control of your data. We even designed it so simply that my parents could use it.
The Problem With No Contacts
Vexl is built like a social network. You only see offers from people you know or people your friends know. That’s the beauty of it — your network is yours. But when someone new to Bitcoin opens the app in, say, Ireland, they hit a wall: no contacts, no offers, no liquidity. We needed to fix that.
Your phone number is still the greatest web of trust in existence — it’s what you give to the people you trust most. When you sign up for Vexl, your number is hashed. We never see it. That hash is what builds your social graph privately.
Introducing Clubs
Today we are announcing Vexl Clubs. Clubs are for people who are new to Bitcoin and don’t yet have contacts in the app. They’re for privacy-conscious Bitcoiners who aren’t ready to import their phone contacts. And they’re for local communities, meetups, and events who want to bootstrap Bitcoin circular economies together.
When you join a club, you immediately start seeing offers from other club members alongside your regular marketplace. You don’t need to import your contacts. You don’t need to be verified by anyone. But you do need access — someone already in the club, a moderator or organizer, has to let you in. This keeps clubs from turning into what we’ve all seen happen to Telegram groups: one wrong addition and it becomes Spamville.
Clubs Are a Stepping Stone, Not a Destination
Clubs are not a reputation system. They are training wheels. You join, you do a couple of trades, you establish trust with someone, and then you swap Vexl contacts directly. At that point, ideally, you leave the club and open up space for the next person who needs to get bootstrapped into peer-to-peer Bitcoin.
You won’t see who else is in the club. You won’t know your counterparty unless you choose to reveal yourself. It’s still private. It’s still encrypted. It just adds a little liquidity for people trying to make their first Bitcoin friends.
Every Community Needs a Club
Think about your local Bitcoin meetup, your farmer friend who wants to earn sats, the electrician in your community who’d rather get paid in Bitcoin than deal with a bank. I would much rather hire someone who shares 25 contacts with me through a trusted Bitcoin community than find a stranger on Google. Clubs are how we build that Bitcoin circular economy from the ground up.
Vexl is fully open source, a nonprofit, and supported through donations and grants from the Human Rights Foundation and OpenSats. We don’t want you to trust us — we want to help you get started. Come find me at the booth. If you see someone wearing a shirt with golden glasses, that’s your ticket in.
