Joe Bryan – What’s The Problem? | BTC Prague 2025 Keynote
There’s a creeping sense that things are not moving in the right direction. The world is slowly deteriorating — and most people think the problems are unconnected. On the BTC Prague stage, I argued they all share one root cause: the quality of our money.
Too Many Problems, One Root Cause
What does the obesity crisis have to do with declining birth rates? What does either have to do with the loss of trust in institutions? For most people outside this room, these feel like separate issues. But for us, it’s clear: they share a root cause, and that’s the quality of our money.
The Island Thought Experiment
Imagine a group of smart people stranded on a deserted island, starting from zero. They need to trade. They need money. And they decide not just to create good money — they want to create perfect money: absolutely scarce, instantly verifiable, effortless to store and move, infinitely divisible, indestructible, fungible, universally accessible, and crucially — censorship resistant. Nobody can take it from you. Nobody can stop you sending or receiving it.
Two leaders emerge. Satoshi says: lock in the perfect money forever, never change it. Fatello agrees on the characteristics but wants a big red button — one that allows changes in an emergency, but of course, nobody will ever press it.
What Happens When You Press the Button
With perfect money and free markets, prices fall and quality rises. Specialisation, competition, savings, investment — it all compounds. The productivity gains of civilisation accrue directly to the money, raising everyone’s quality of life, including those who are unproductive.
Then governments inevitably run deficits. Satoshi’s only options are raise taxes or cut spending. Fatello has a third option. He presses the button. He gets re-elected. He thinks there are zero consequences.
But something has changed. Debasing the currency distorts price signals, pulling entrepreneurs and capital toward government-connected sectors. Input costs rise for every business. Entrepreneurs are squeezed and respond by raising prices, shrinking products, or cutting quality — including the quality of food, which quietly becomes industrialised sludge. An obesity crisis follows. A health crisis. Bigger government.
Asset Inflation and the Collapse of the Family
Asset prices inflate. House prices soar. Rents rise. Those without assets fall further behind. Families need two incomes just to afford a mortgage. They have fewer children. People slip into hopelessness, addiction, mental health crises. The nuclear family breaks down. And government grows again to manage every downstream consequence.
Meanwhile, parasitic industries attach themselves to the state. Media gets captured. Crony corporatism replaces free market capitalism. Forever wars are manufactured. Each crisis demands another press of the button — each time bigger than the last.
The Escape Valve and Where It Ends
Eventually, capital flees. People sell Fatellos to buy Satoshis. So Fatello patches the leak by removing the censorship-resistant nature of the money — forcing everything through banks, justifying it with anti-money laundering, fraud protection, terrorist financing. Capital still finds a way. It always does.
This ends in one of four places: sustained inflation bordering on hyperinflation, asset seizures, communism, or something worse. The dollar has compromised on the same characteristics as Fatello — and it’s materially worse on the other five. Losing two trillion a year. Thirty-six trillion in debt. Fifty to two hundred trillion in future obligations. And it’s still the best fiat we have.
Fix the Money, Fix the World
Nothing stops this train from within the system. There is only one solution: the separation of money and state. Nobody should have access to a big red button. If we fix the money, we fix the world.
