Leon Wankum – How Bitcoin Changes the Way Humanity Saves and Lives
Bitcoin doesn’t just change money — it changes every industry built on top of broken money. On the BTC Prague stage, I walked through how real estate, business intelligence, and capital structures everywhere are being repriced by sound money, and why that’s ultimately a good thing for all of us.
Real Estate Was Never Really About Buildings
A lot of people ask me: Leon, if Bitcoin is a better store of value than real estate, why do you keep talking about real estate? The answer is simple. Just because Bitcoin changes an industry doesn’t mean that industry disappears. Real estate became a monetary substitute because inflation decimated purchasing power. People didn’t buy property because they loved being landlords — they bought it because they had no better option to preserve wealth. Together with US 10-year Treasuries, real estate forms the bedrock of the global financial system. Bitcoin is going to replace both in that role.
Fiat Money Creates a Calculation Problem
It’s no coincidence that the first company to successfully adopt a Bitcoin treasury standard was a business intelligence firm. Without sound money, business intelligence is actually impossible. As Mises understood, unsound money produces unsound price signals. Money is information — who owns what, what things cost. When that signal is corrupted, every decision built on top of it is distorted. By replacing fiat reserves with Bitcoin, Strategy restored clarity. That same logic applies to every single industry.
The MetaPlanet Case
Japan is a perfect example of what happens when real estate loses its function as a store of value. MetaPlanet started as a hotel business, pivoted decisively into Bitcoin, and became one of the most successful stocks of the past 18 months. The reason is straightforward: the business model of using real estate as an inflation hedge and leveraging it to acquire more assets works far better with Bitcoin. A real estate development cycle takes five years. MetaPlanet executes a Bitcoin buy in two days. They completed 60 buys in 12 months and doubled their Bitcoin stack roughly every 60 days. Classical real estate investing simply cannot compete with that.
There’s also a positive secondary effect that I think is deeply underestimated. When you invest through a vehicle like MetaPlanet rather than buying physical property, you stop driving up the cost of housing for everyone else. That matters.
Bitcoin Aligns Incentives Across Every Layer
When you include Bitcoin in a real estate project — whether through larger loan proceeds used to buy Bitcoin, or by building inflation-resistant maintenance reserves — every partner benefits. The developer gets higher returns. The capital partner is happy. The bank has better collateral. Even the architect benefits, because Bitcoin’s appreciating purchasing power creates more time for thoughtful, beautiful design instead of rushing to sell before inflation eats the margin. And tenants benefit too: landlords who hold Bitcoin don’t need to constantly raise rents.
A Practical Strategy for Builders
The phases are straightforward. First, recapitalize with Bitcoin — divest tax-advantaged real estate, refinance properties you want to keep, and allocate into Bitcoin. Second, use Bitcoin to hedge construction costs, protect cash flow, and unlock geopolitical arbitrage by holding keys across jurisdictions. Third, start raising even a small percentage of capital in satoshis. If you do this consistently, by the time you go public or raise large sums, you’ll need to give up far less equity because your Bitcoin will have grown substantially.
I’ve built a tool at digitalrealestate.org to help people model exactly this — how including Bitcoin in real estate investments improves performance across different scenarios based on the halving cycle and power law. My book, Digital Real Estate, is coming in Q4 this year. Bitcoin isn’t just a tool to add to what you do — it’s the foundation to build everything on top of.
