Mariel Lang – Building Bitcoin Communities That Last: Lessons From the Ground
From Venezuela’s hyperinflationary collapse to running one of the largest Bitcoin education programs in South America — without government prosecution (as far as we know). At the BTC Prague stage, I shared the framework we built from the ground up, and why whispering Bitcoin is more powerful than screaming it.
My Click Moment
I first heard about Bitcoin in 2013. Someone mentioned it as a stock conversation and I thought, oh nice, a financial asset, and walked toward it for completely the wrong reasons. But that small click grew into something much bigger: how can I bring this into the crisis I know? How can I make this actually happen?
Living through hyperinflation in Venezuela made Bitcoin feel like two plus two. The bolívar was toilet paper. We used the dollar because people thought it was strong. And when I started using Bitcoin on LocalBitcoins — trading with someone called BDC Master 69 whose face I never saw — I realized something profound: no one told us this was money. No one imposed it. We just accepted it. That was my ideological click. There was no reliable political party, no opposition worth trusting. Bitcoin wasn’t a person. It was common sense translated into technological money.
Venezuela Was the Perfect Laboratory
We used to be one of the biggest mining countries in the world. Those machines are seized now. But before that happened, a whole parallel economy formed — one that had more real volume than anything the government sanctioned. People earning $100 a month still found a way to get Bitcoin. I sent it to family members I couldn’t reach physically. I saw the peer-to-peer marketplace expand in real time.
When things started gaining visibility, the government came after it. Anyone with a Bitcoin article became the enemy. They used Bitcoin as a scapegoat for everything they were doing wrong — flagging it as financial terrorism while seizing and selling it themselves. So we had to find a way to speak about Bitcoin without being legally accused of terrorism.
The Stealth Approach
Here’s what we learned: talking about inflation and Bitcoin as the solution will get you chased. But talking about the technology of Bitcoin? The government didn’t understand it. They knew the word was bad, but they didn’t grasp the economic purpose. So we found a way to speak publicly about something they couldn’t go after because they simply didn’t get it.
We started knocking on doors — universities, foundations, colleges. Every direct approach was a no. But when we came in through the angle of technology, digital assets, and markets, doors opened. We eventually got a university to say yes to a Bitcoin education program. Their one condition: no Bitcoin in the name. So after a lot of discussion and probably too many coffees, we called it BTC Academy. Blockchain, Trading and Crypto — officially. Bitcoin Academy — to everyone who matters.
The college didn’t even flinch at the acronym. They thought it sounded cool. We panicked for nothing.
What Actually Works
We now have more than 20 academic programs. All of them include Bitcoin — not just as an asset, but philosophically, ideologically, and technologically. We never tell students to buy Bitcoin, get a wallet, or run a node. That’s their choice. And yet we see 100% Bitcoin adoption among students who complete our full Bitcoin programs, and over 60% across all programs — including ones where Bitcoin appears in just one out of six classes.
We stopped screaming Bitcoin from the top of Everest and started whispering it. People not only liked it — they acted on it. And we operate completely in plain sight. It’s a Trojan horse, and it works.
The college now has a financial dependency on us. They want a Bitcoin treasury. It’s a domino effect.
The Framework Anyone Can Replicate
This isn’t luck. It’s a repeatable framework. First, meet people where they are. In Venezuela, hyperinflation made Bitcoin obvious. In
