Rod Roudi – The Value of Physical Bitcoin Spaces

A drizzly night in Nashville, a nervous first meetup, and one stranger saying “I thought I was the only one” — that moment changed everything for me. I shared this story on the BTC Prague stage, because I truly believe physical Bitcoin spaces are the backbone of grassroots Bitcoin and freedom tech adoption.

It Started With Twenty People

It was my friend Mills who suggested we start a Bitcoin meetup in Nashville, Tennessee. I was nervous. I didn’t think anyone would show up. But they did — some skeptical, some excited. One guy walked up to me and said, “Dude, I thought I was the only one into Bitcoin. My wife thinks I’m crazy.” That was the moment it clicked. These physical spaces aren’t just nice to have. They’re where real community gets built.

From that small gathering, things grew fast. Twenty people became fifty, then a hundred, then two hundred — people flying in, driving in, even a high school student taking two bus rides just to attend. That’s when my co-founder Matt Odell and I decided we needed our own permanent space. Bitcoin Park Nashville was born, and now we also have Bitcoin Park Austin.

The Connections You Can’t Plan

One Saturday morning in 2022, my friend Casey Rodermore asked to host a Rust workshop at the park. Six people showed up. One of them was Matthew Ramston, someone I’d never met. He connected with Steve Myers that day, and together they went on to host over thirty Bit Devs meetups — what I’d argue is the best Bit Devs in the world. That all happened because six people showed up to a workshop I almost said no to.

I could tell story after story like this. Rob Hamilton moved his entire team and launched Anchorwatch at Bitcoin Park. Joe Wood. Steve Myers starting the BDK Foundation. Dentists, doctors, plumbers, retirees — all drawn together by Bitcoin. It’s a gravitational force that thrives in community.

Solo Mining a Block Against All Odds

My friend Econo Alchemist and I do a podcast called Pod 256, and we started this idea of a “Teleahash” — like a telethon, but for donated hash rate toward a solo mining operation using open-source Bitaxe miners. The month before our event, we had zero committed hash rate. Then, on a safari in Nairobi with Eric Hurstman from Gridless, a gentleman named Marshall Long overheard our conversation and offered one exahash. The odds of hitting a block with that, for eight hours? About one in a thousand.

At block height 881423, we solo mined a Bitcoin block at Bitcoin Park. I won’t pretend that anything will top that moment in my Bitcoin career. But here’s the thing — it only happened because of a chain of physical meetups and human connections. No energy summit, no meeting Eric, no safari, no Marshall Long, no block.

What You Can Do Right Now

Local spaces are launchpads for innovation, real conversations, and genuine Bitcoin adoption. So here’s what I’d ask of you. First, show up. RSVP, come, help with chairs and refreshments. If there’s no meetup near you, start one. Second, financially support your local organizer if you can — these spaces need sustainable economic models, not just grants. Third, share with your network. My favorite social media is email. Forward that meetup invite. One conversation, one handshake, could change someone’s life — maybe yours.

Come visit us at bitcoinpark.com. Whether you bike, walk, scoot, or paraglide into Nashville or Austin, we’d love to see you. You never know what that first meetup might start.
