Samantha de Waal – Four Reasons Why Bitcoin Matters

I’m 14 years old, half German, half Kiwi, and I’ve been telling people to get their kids into Bitcoin for a while now — but I’ve never given concrete reasons why. On the BTC Prague stage, I decided to change that. Here are the reasons Bitcoin genuinely matters.

Financial Freedom Isn’t What You Think It Is

Let’s be completely honest. Most of us don’t have real control over our money. Banks stop transactions, freeze accounts, and track everything like it’s some kind of game. And the fact that they even have this power is deeply concerning — never mind that they abuse it.

As a kid, I can’t legally create my own bank account. People tell me I can, but that’s false. What I can do is use my dad’s account, where he can see every transaction and where I spend my money. I trust my dad — but so many kids don’t have that luxury. Kids growing up in abusive households have no real financial freedom, and that has serious consequences for their futures.

Honestly, I don’t even want a bank account. I want Bitcoin. Bitcoin is borderless. It doesn’t care who I am or where I live. It just lets me use it — without someone tracking me or stopping me. That’s what financial freedom actually means, and most people don’t realise they’re missing it because they’ve never had it.

This applies to investments too. Paper gold, shares, even Bitcoin held on exchanges — these are only yours as long as someone lets you have them. If you don’t hold your Bitcoin, you only own it as long as someone permits it. Not your keys, not your coins.

Bitcoin and the Environment — The Real Story

I know people say Bitcoin is bad for the environment. But here’s the truth: Bitcoin mining is actually driving renewable energy adoption. Miners go where power is cheap, and that’s very often where energy is wasted or stranded. You can’t easily send large amounts of energy over long distances — you lose a lot of it and it damages the environment. So normally, the most useful thing people can do with stranded energy is waste it. Bitcoin changes that.

Solar panels and wind farms overproduce on good days and underproduce on others. Bitcoin mining absorbs that excess. Before criticising how much energy Bitcoin uses, please research where that energy actually comes from.

There’s also a deeper connection. Fiat money lets governments print currency and devalue everyone else’s savings — essentially stealing from people’s pockets to fund wars and fossil fuel subsidies. Bitcoin can’t be printed. Governments can only spend what they actually have. That alone makes the world a cleaner, fairer place.

Inflation Is Theft

People call rising prices normal. It isn’t. It’s theft. If you save in dollars today, in 15 years that money will be worth less than half of what it is now. Somewhere in the world, a money printer is running right now — and it never really stops.

Some people think inflation hurts the wealthy more because they have savings. That’s completely backwards. Rich people store value in property and capital, not fiat. Poor people save in fiat — if they can save at all. When prices rise faster than wages, the poorest are hit hardest. Inflation widens the gap between rich and poor, making the rich richer and pushing the middle class toward poverty.

Bitcoin has a fixed supply. You’re not punished for saving. Nobody moves the finish line. For so many people — including me — Bitcoin is genuine hope.

Bitcoin Communities Are Growing Where They’re Needed Most

Around the world, Bitcoin communities are emerging to solve real, local money problems. Bitcoin Ekasi in South Africa, Bitcoin Jungle in Costa Rica, Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador, Bitcoin Lake in Guatemala. Notice something? It’s not Bitcoin New York or Bitcoin London. It’s the places where money is most broken — where people need free, open, uncensorable money the most.
